For new postulants Jane and Annie and Kat, Agnus Dei was a place of misery, confusion, and sadness, because each was tormented by vivid memories of worldly desires and experiences. On their very first night, Kat lay in bed chain-smoking, yearning for the touch of her lover. Annie slept, but dreamed of only wealth and luxury. Jane, at midnight, when the others were finally asleep, slipped from her cubicle to feed the birds.
